A little bit about me:

I’m Linnea, and I’m fat. That’s not the whole story, but it’s why I started Big Moves – to share my plus-size fitness journey. Trying new activities as a plus-size person comes with some unique experiences, and I wanted to create a space where we could talk about that openly, without any pressure to shrink ourselves to fit in (literally or figuratively).

But there’s more to me than just my size! People describe me as friendly, bubbly, charismatic, a little awkward. On the inside, I’m a socially anxious extrovert (a super fun combo, I assure you) – I love meeting new people and trying different activities, even if my brain’s default mode is to panic first. I’m definitely that person who’ll crack a joke at the most awkward moment just to break the tension.

When I’m not out on some new adventure (whether it’s snowshoeing or attempting a new fitness class), you can find me at home knitting, playing board games with friends, or planning my next escapade. I’m a sucker for good snacks, cozy blankets, and, of course, my cat, Spice. I grew up in the grey, rainy corner of Canada but now live in the cold, wintry, French-speaking part.

Focusing very hard on showing off my cute bangs – and yes, I know I look way younger than I am! (Photo credit: Me!)

Why I started Big Moves

So why Big Moves? Well, I’ve spent a lot of my life wanting to try new things but feeling unsure whether my body would be accepted. I love studio workouts, but will they have plus-size modifications? The last time I went skiing, it was 2004, and I had to be rescued off an easy hill by skidoo – so yeah, I’m a little apprehensive to try that again!

After hours of Googling things like “fat-friendly Orangetheory first time” or “plus-size beginner skiing,” I found plenty of thin people trying things for the first time, and plus-size folks absolutely crushing their sport. What I didn’t find was a bigger-bodied person just… trying lots of things for the first time! I figured I couldn’t be the only one asking, “Can my fat body do this? So I started Big Moves to start that conversation.

What you’ll find at Big Moves

I created Big Moves to be a supportive, welcoming space where people of all sizes can share their experiences of stepping out of their comfort zones and into new adventures. I also want to keep this space free from diet and weight talk. With a history of disordered eating, I’m more focused on how my body feels than on numbers. But size still matters, so I’ll share clothing sizes and body measurements when they’re relevant – and I encourage you to do the same if you want!

If you’re curious, nervous, excited, or just wondering if your body can try something new, stick around. I’ll be sharing my stories, stumbles, successes, and the hilarious in-betweens, and I hope you’ll feel inspired to make some big moves of your own.
